Volunteers in Action

In most communities, large or small, volunteerism is vital to the day to day lives of its citizens. Volunteerism takes many forms---serving on boards or committees, distributing groceries through food banks in churches, volunteering for fire and/or rescue squad, and giving transportation for doctor appointments or treatments. With the cost of fuel volunteerism is becoming much more of a sacrifice; however, our citizens do not seem less willing to serve.

Although government involvement is needed to regulate citizen participation in some areas, it should not be burdensome or delay implementation. Examples abound in Floyd. It has taken two years for amateur radio operators to develop an agreement with the county in order to be a back-up for emergency services. A committed band of volunteers stand ready to give time at the animal shelter to help solve problems related to unwanted dogs and cats. How long will it take to write the Memorandum of Understanding and get it approved?

Trails in Floyd, a volunteer group, is trying to develop a walking and biking trail around the Town of Floyd. In the future there are plans for more extensive trail systems. The Recreational Authority and the Town of Floyd have refused to hold the easement through the park and now the county has been asked to take that responsibility. With grant money in hand to work on the trail,Trails in Floyd should not have to suffer long delays until the Board of Supervisors can decide whether or not to grant their request.

I could not agree more with your take on volunteerism. It's just indefensible that the BOS throws up roadblocks to volunteer groups, especially when they have their own insurance (talking about the Humane Society). How many good, loving animals are being put down while they deliberate and find more hoops to throw? Enough already!

I still think the BOS should not allow them there. They have a hidden agenda and it will be seen when it is too late. I hope the BOS reject the request, it is the sensible thing to do.

What hidden agenda do you think the Humane Society has in trying to save animals from needless death? You think it is a good idea that the pound is currently understaffed and overworked and there are people ready and willing to go in and help care for the animals, but the BOS is stonewalling? Hidden agenda? WEhat are you talking about? Please explain because this makes no sense without more details from you.

The agenda of wanting to keep the animals for long periods of time. The county is in financial troubles and don't need to spend money to keep the animals over 5 days. There are more deserving needs which help HUMANS than animals. I love animals but people need to keep things in perspective. Animals are not humans and should not be treated as such.

Currently the county euthanizes cats immediately. The cages are there and ready to take in cats. Why not at least keep them for 7 days like is currently being done for dogs? The Humane Society is run on membership fees, donations, and fundraisers. The BOS could easily allow the volunteers in the pound and keep the budget that same and let the HS foot the extra costs. Or, the County could get rid of the person who is currently on administrative leave and put that money back into the pound's budget and use that money for the animals. Why waste the money on someone who is on leave? Why is he pocketing the money he isn't earning?

Because he is INNOCENT until proven guilty. I also feel the liability that would be on the county would be great, even if the HS claims to have insurance ultimately the liability would call back on the County. The HS would not be knowledgeable and as careful as to the liability as a paid employee would be. Letting the HS in the pound is an accident waiting to happen.
Why not put your extra funds to helping the under fed kids in the community rather than feeding an animal. Where I come from human life if far greater than animals.

The HS is run on membership fees and donations. The people who give to the HS want their money spent on the animals. No one is saying that animals are more valuable that people. It isn't up to you to decide where their donations are being spent. The HS DOES have insurance.

Obviously one of the paid employees you already have (who is draining money from the system) isn't all that knowledgeable or careful. And when one decides to 'off' an animal in a reckless manner, accidents can happen and an innocent life can be lost.

The plain and simple is this....... the BOS has more critical concerns before them that affect every citizen than to debate and be concerned that the HS is wanting in to extend animals life by a few days. It is totally amazing how far off this country has come. How many of you are so perfect and has never had an accident. What is wrong with killing an animal you own for meat. If it is out of control that is a viable option and I have know many who has done the same. The bible tells us that God gave man animals for food. How soon we forget that or people now don't read it, that is the main reason we are in the shape we are in, we have turned from God.
An interesting comment of the last poster..."And when one decides to 'off' an animal in a reckless manner, accidents can happen and an innocent life can be lost.". I say the same to the abortions being committed every day to the innocent babies and LIVES are being lost. I bet most of your members are "pro choice". Go figure save an animal but is ok to kill an innocent baby. People are misguided and blinded by the devil in this day and time that is what's wrong. We are in deep trouble, I hope and pray they soon open their eyes!!
